Happy New Year 2018! A new year means new places to visit, new food to try, new people to meet and the list goes on.
It’s always fun to compile a list of places to visit each year so I thought I’d make another. I’m not a professional travel expert, but I do follow Instagram trends closely to know over the last couple of months there is a rise in travelers to different countries and cities now going into 2018.
I want to point out there are always the timeless places like France, United Kingdom, Greece, Italy, etc. that seem to be popular at all times, so they are not on this particular list.
Here we go!
Portugal
Lisbon, Sintra, Porto – all keep popping up on my Instagram feed. I can see why Portugal is becoming very popular. It’s such a beautiful country!
While we haven’t been to Portugal, I have heard from fellow travelers that it’s one of the most affordable countries they’ve ever visited in Europe.
The Bahamas
Whether via cruise or plane, go to the Bahamas at least once, you will love it!
We went there recently so expect many Bahamas blog posts in the coming weeks. It’s a beautiful country and we loved its capital city, Nassau so much that we are seriously thinking about going back. We also would love to visit The Exumas – a chain of 365 islands dripping with paradise.
Check out our video of our Nassau visit.
Thailand
Phi Phi Islands and Chiang Mai in particular are repeatedly shown in my social media feeds.
I’ve always wanted to visit Thailand as my very first country to ever visit in Asia. It’s beautiful, rich in culture and from what I’ve been told – very affordable.
Malta
A friend of mine visited Malta last year and I was so jealous she couldn’t pack me in her suitcase!
The walled-city of Valletta has amazing architecture and although I’ve never been, the photos of this gorgeously ornate city almost remind me of Rome – one of our favorite cities we’ve visited in Italy.
New Orleans, Louisiana
I was surprised to see NOLA gaining popularity on Instagram. I love New Orleans and not only because my parents are from Louisiana, but the food and history is mind blowing. Plus, Mardi Gras is pretty awesome.
Now I feel like eating boudin!
Saint Augustine, Florida
I’ve had Saint Augustine on my bucket list of places to visit for the last couple of years, so I was super excited to finally visit in 2017. Check out our Saint Augustine guide here!
With large Spanish influence in architecture, it’s one of those cities where you feel like you’ve been transported to another country. The last time we’ve felt that way about a city was in Quebec.
You would never believe you were still in Florida. Saint Augustine could easily be a world of its own.
New York City, New York
It seems like everyone is going to New York City. I haven’t been there in years, but it really is a great city with so much to see and do, I promise you will not get bored.
The food scene is amazing as well!
Colombia
I’m just going to sneak Colombia here on my 2018 list!
I still have my eye on visiting Cartagena. It would be an easy place for us to travel to from our city and also very affordable.

January 7, 2018 at 11:07 amPortugal, Malta and Colombia are excellent picks and very high on my wishlist. I have a feeling Central Asia will be on the rise soon though, with the Silk Road belt initiatives giving places like Kazakhstan a limelight.
