All around the world, there are some locations that have won the hearts and minds of art lovers in their millions. Whether it is Christian art or simply art in general, you have many locations to pick from for your next visit. Here are ten art destinations you can pick from.
Salvation Mountain – Niland, CA
The Salvation Mountain was declared by the Folk Art Society of America as a “folk art site worthy of preservation and protection” in the year 2000. The society followed up that with the handwork of Leonard Knight of one of the most beautiful pieces of outdoor art.
Cadillac Ranch – Amarillo, Texas
The ranch is a collection that was started in 1974 by Ant Farm which was an art collective. It has been featured in Bruce Springsteen’s 1980 album The River and Pixar’s Cars. There are cars buried in the ground with the bodies covered in paint.
Roden Crater – Flagstaff, Arizona
The crater is 3 miles wide and has existed for at least 400,000 years. The great thing about it that it was bought in 1979 by the artist James Turrell as part of the many Land Art projects around the world. The view is breathtaking.
The Sistine Chapel – Vatican City
The Vatican City is home to some of the most iconic pieces of art to this day. In the Sistine Chapel, you can find works by great artists such as Domenico Ghirlandaio and Sandro Botticelli. However, the one standing above the rest is Last Judgement by Michelangelo.
Chapelle du Rosaire de Vence – Vence, France
This is the project started by Henri Matisse when he was 77 years of age. He started it to put together great pieces of art including many of his own.
Spiral Jetty – Great Salt Lake, Utah
Started by Robert Smithson in 1970, The Spiral Jetty has become a favorite tourist destination for many people. It features a massive spiral of land extending out from the mainland to the lake. Nothing compares to this large piece of land art as it is one of the few that is built on water.
The Lightning Field – Catron County, New Mexico
Another great piece of land art is The Lightning Field in New Mexico. 400 rods made of gleaming stainless steel are neatly arranged in the desert. They look great just to look at them and when storms gather above, they act as lightning arrestors for lovely fireworks.
Marfa, Texas
This little art museum located in the desert is one of the most unique locations around the world. It was set up as a combined effort of the Dia Art Foundation and Donald Judd.
Nazca Lines – Nazca Desert, Peru
The Nazca people, who lived in this region from around 1 to 700 AD, are believed to have created some of the best pieces of land art to date. The perfectly geometric figures can be seen even from space. They are the pioneers of modern land art.
Rothko Chapel – Houston, Texas
The Rothko Chapel houses Mark Rothko’s painting No. 10 which was a subject of controversy when the Museum of Modern Art acquired it back in 1952. The chapel currently houses his famous painting in all its quiet majesty. A look at it will easily saying the artistic soul in every one of us.
Visiting art locations has a calming and inspiring effect upon the visitors. For these ten destinations discussed here, you find some of the most unique features. The focus has been placed on land art given that it is one of the most difficult to come up with.
