About Castillo de San Marcos
On our recent visit to Saint Augustine, Florida we spent a few hours exploring its Spaniard built fort: Castillo de San Marcos. It’s a 17th century fort and the oldest fort in the United States. It has endured many battles, raids, wars and sieges, including a 2 month siege when British forces arrived in November 1702 to take over which at that time, Spanish territory.
The 21 acre fort was built using a stone called “coquina” found only in the Saint Augustine area which is actually made from the shells of dead shellfish that bonded together. The grass that surrounds the fort is actually a dry moat which once had water to aid in keeping enemies out.
There are cannon fire demonstrations held daily, you don’t want to miss that. Just remember to plug your ears and enjoy the show!
We hope this video will inspire you to visit Saint Augustine, thank you for watching and share it with your friends!
