A Quick Guide to Punta Cana, Dominican Republic

Are you planning a trip to Punta Cana? Here is some essential information for planning your Caribbean vacation.

Brief History

When you think of Punta Cana, what is the first thing that comes to mind? All-inclusive? Well, you’re right! Punta Cana became an all-inclusive resort territory in the 1960s when it was bought by American investors. The building of lavish resorts began soon after with others jumping on the opportunity to open hotels along Punta Cana’s beautiful white sand beaches.  In fact, the Punta Cana airport was built in participation with famous singer, Julio Iglesias, Club Med, Oscar de la Renta and others.

Quick Facts

  • Punta Cana faces both the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean
  • Spanish is the official language in the Dominican Republic however, English is widely spoken in touristy areas – especially Punta Cana
  • Currency is the Dominican Peso (or Pesos) but US cash is also accepted
  • Bring a poncho or umbrella if you plan on being out in particularly the rainy season of March – July
  • Punta Cana is located in La Altagracia Province in the southeast of the Dominican Republic
  • We were advised to not drink water from the tap (which we didn’t) since our stomachs aren’t used to the local microorganisms in their water it will make you a little ill. Hotels normally provide bottled water in your rooms. They also serve filtered water throughout the property.

Where to Stay

There are many beach front resorts and hotels scattered around Punta Cana so to narrow down your choices, search for a place in your preferred price range. You should also look at what activities, food and entertainment are provided because not every hotel or resort will offer the same things. We stayed at Club Med Punta Cana which you can read about here. It is a beautiful resort! Zen Oasis is their new adult-only zone but they do offer accommodations for families around other parts of the resort.

Excursions

The possibilities are endless! You can go horse back riding, fishing, hiking, shopping in Higuey city, but it will cost you! We really wanted to venture off the resort and see the real Dominican Republic, so we did a day trip with Outback Adventures. We visited some local schools, toured a farm, a Dominican home, experienced the countryside in the Anamuya Mountains and much more! If you’re really feeling up to it, you can take a bus tour to Santo Domingo which is 2 1/2 hours away and spend a day there (be prepared for a long day though!)

If you visit Punta Cana and you’re feeling adventurous I really think you should get off the resort because there is so much to do and see!

I’d like to thank Lonely Planet for providing our Dominican Republic guidebook. It really helped us prepare for our trip! As always, my opinions are my own.

All-Inclusive: Club Med Punta Cana

Tucked away where the Caribbean Sea meets the Atlantic Ocean, is the all-inclusive Club Med Punta Cana in beautiful Dominican Republic. We stayed in their newest addition to the property, Zen Oasis which you can read about here.

club-med-punta-cana

This all-inclusive resort has 631 rooms making it Club Med’s largest Caribbean resort. It also offers accommodations and activities for all types of travelers from couples to families.

There are Sports Schools available for almost any sport you can think of trying such as tennis, yoga, fitness classes and more! The trainers are committed to working with you to excel at your choice of sport. I absolutely loved the archery school, it made me feel like Katniss from The Hunger Games!

Activities

You can also try your hand at water sports with or without a trainer. We took a sailing class with our trainer, Ryan. I was a nervous at first, but he was informative and I felt safe sailing out on the ocean with him – thank you Ryan!

creactive-by-cirque-du-soleil

Another great addition to Club Med is CREACTIVE by Cirque du Soleil where you can test your limits and learn how to fly on a trapeze, face paint and much more. There are 30 recreational and acrobatic activities for children and adults at Club Med’s immersive CREACTIVE playscape. You’re going to work up an appetite with all the activities at Club Med Punta Cana, which is a good thing they have 3 bars and 3 restaurants.

Dining

Hibiscus Bar & Lounge, Cielo and the Indigo Beach Lounge Bar are fully stocked with tasty beverages and snacks. Hispaniola is an international buffet open for certain meals during the season. They were serving breakfast and lunch during out visit. The restaurant sits on a terrace overlooking the ocean.

Dinner at Samana is an absolute must! There is an international cuisine buffet complete with appetizers, breads, fruits, cheeses and desserts. You can also order wine with your meal at no cost (unless you want a special brand – you can buy a bottle at La Cave.)

breakfast-at-indigo

Indigo Beach Lounge Restaurant offers a nice sit down menu with tables overlooking the sea. We ate a delicious breakfast there and if you visit, try their catch of the day for lunch – the fish is amazing! If you want a table near the water for dinner, you will need to make a reservation.

chief-of-village

Club Med Punta Cana may also be a family resort, but the night life is spectacular! Leisure Services Manager, Quentin Bourru, was the interim Chief of Village during our stay and he was an amazing host! He recently was promoted as a Chief of Village for another resort. I can honestly say he will make a wonderful Chief of Village! He was energetic, friendly and his positive energy made everyone have the best time.

nightlife

There is a different entertainment theme each night such as a talent show, Dominican Night, and Creactive Under the Stars. There is also a dress code for each night but you don’t have to follow it, however it is a lot of fun to do! For instance, Saturdays are “Red and White” so in the evening you would wear a red and white outfit.

club-med-45

My favorite was “Black and 45” because we got to wear our very cool Club Med 45 Punta Cana shirts kindly given to us by Marion and Carmelo at La Boutique – an on site shop filled with adorable Club Med gear!
sunset

Club Med feels like a family from our interaction with the G.O.s and G.M.s, we truly had a memorable Club Med experience and made new friends along the way. We did not want to leave when it was time to go home. Not only is Club Med Punta Cana a stunning property to keep in our memories, but the kind and generous staff will never be forgotten.

I’d like to thank Club Med for hosting us in Punta Cana, my opinions are always my own.palm-tree

Sustainable Tourism with Outback Adventures Dominican Republic

On our recent trip to the Dominican Republic, we had the opportunity of venturing through the countryside in the Anamuya Mountains.  There are many tours you can take while visiting Punta Cana, but Outback Adventures stood out to us among the rest.outback-adventures-tours-dominican-republic

When we visit a destination, we like to experience and learn about its culture. Outback Adventures Full Day Safari Tour delivered that! We were picked up from our resort around 8am and greeted with a smile by the wonderful guide, Angel and our driver for the day, Papi. By the way, you will not go thirsty on this tour! Each tour has a cooler filled with bottled water, sodas, rum and beer which you can have any time on the tour. I promise they will keep you hydrated!

We were the first stop for pick up on the covered, open-air bus and stopped at a few other resorts on the way to the countryside. Yes, the Dominican Republic has many beautiful resorts and beaches, but I recommend taking the time to get off the resort for a day and see how most of the Dominicans are really living. What we saw along the way was an eye opening experience.

school-bus

There was a school bus following behind us at one point and I thought there were kids on it. We were told the bus was actually transporting workers to some of the resorts as transportation is hard to come by for many. Tourism has a huge impact on the economy there.

During our drive through El Salao and La Ceiba, we learned that many are living in less fortunate conditions while working hard to provide for their family. I found myself breaking into tears as we drove through some of the villages. From the server at your resort’s restaurant to the housekeeping staff for your room – these are the very people who go home at the end of each day, many living in conditions like these.

dominican-republic-school

Escuela (School)

We had the opportunity to stop by a couple of schools in the villages El Caño and Isleño. This is one of the reasons why we love Outback Adventures. They are active in giving back to the community and committed to educating visitors about the Dominican Republic. The schools are in constant need of school supplies, uniforms and other useful items in the classroom.

Tip: Please donate useful items, not candy. Also, if you know someone visiting a Punta Cana resort and they want to book this tour through their resort, please let them know about the donation opportunity prior to their trip so they can bring supplies along. A lot of the people in our group booked through their resort’s excursion desk. They said the resort agent did not tell them about the opportunity to make donations to the schools. We knew about school donations prior to the trip and brought some with us thanks to reading Trip Advisor reviews.
dominican-republic-classroom

dominican-republic-students

The donations to the schools go directly to the teacher (we know because we witnessed it!) tourists used to give it directly to the students who would chase after the tour bus but it became a distraction from their learning. It’s a struggle for the parents who are doing their best to send their kids to school so they may have a chance of living a better life when they grow up. I think we take simple things like these for granted and remember: you never know what kind of struggle a stranger is going through so try to be kind!

cigars

Dominican Flavors

After a bumpy and adventurous ride (we didn’t mind!) we arrived at our first stop for lunch, a cigar demonstration and a little shopping at some local shops. We took a tour around the ranch and saw the cutest farm animals. They even had iguanas, flamingos and a crocodile!

The cigars come in different sizes and even flavors such as vanilla and mango. We each were given one to sample (or you could just smell it!) A lot of work goes into making each cigar and it is all done by hand.

rum

We also tasted the popular Dominican drink mamajuana, rum and chocolate wine. I wanted to take a bottle home but we bought a box of cigars to give to some friends. They were made locally by the demonstrator we had just seen.

mountain-countryside

I don’t think I had ever seen such beautiful greenery until we visited the Dominican Republic. Not to mention the fragrant flowers and other plant life.

Lunch was served “family style” and the view of the lush mountainside was very beautiful. Fried chicken, rice, beans, salads and other items were served, it was delicious! If you’re a vegetarian, they have vegetarian dishes too. Rum, beer, bottled water and sodas were the choices of drinks.

bathroom

Tip: If you’re wondering about bathrooms on this tour, there are bathrooms at the lunch stop and at the next stop I will tell you about. You can also use a bathroom at one of the resort pick up points on the way to the mountain (unless you’re the last pick up then go before you board.)

dominican-house

Dominican Life

Our next stop was at the home of Chapi and his wife Aracelis in the small village of Palo Amargo de Anamuya. They live there along with their 3 kids and adorable puppy. We had the opportunity to walk through their home to see what a typical Dominican home looks like.

dominican-kitchen

I was surprised to learn that their kitchen is in a separate structure from the house – same goes for their bathroom. Their home could be compared relatively in size with a 1-bedroom apartment and meals are cooked outside over a fire for most of the time. My husband grew up partly in South America and then Trinidad, he explained to me this was the norm where he was from as well.

coffee-plant

Aracelis and Angel demonstrated the process of making coffee, which we also got to try. The green plant in this photo are coffee berries on a branch. When they are ripe they are sorted by color and ripeness. The flesh is removed and the beans are washed and then dried in the sun for a few days. Next, they are roasted and finely grounded using a mill or grinder which turns it into the powder that you use to brew your coffee each day. We got to taste this coffee roasted with cinnamon and it was so good!

macao-beach

Macao Beach

If you want to take a bag home, you can purchase the coffee from Aracelis. After filling up on some fresh coconut, fruit and hot cocoa, we boarded the bus and headed to our last stop, Macao Beach. This beach is the last public beach in the La Altagracia province so there are some locals there as well as tourists.

Tip: There isn’t a place to change into your swimsuit so either wear it under your clothes or you can change at one of the stops with a bathroom and don’t forget to bring sunscreen and a towel. If boogie boarding is your thing – there are some on the back of the truck that is provided for your use. You can leave your bags on the bus (at every stop you get off) because the drivers always stay behind to guard the bus. We felt very safe on this tour!

A Learning Opportunity

I hope you’ll get a chance to visit the Dominican Republic and if you do, I recommend taking this full day excursion with Outback Adventures. With their experienced guides you will learn a lot, eat a lot and laugh a lot! But most important, you have the opportunity to make a change in someone’s life. You’ll come away from this tour with a fresher view of seeing the world and maybe you’ll even start by helping your community at home.

Although we were invited as guests, our opinions are always our own.

Stay, Eat, Play: Club Med Punta Cana’s Zen Oasis

If you’re looking for an escape to paradise, then you may not have to search far. Tucked away where the Caribbean Sea meets the Atlantic Ocean, is the all-inclusive Club Med Punta Cana in beautiful Dominican Republic.

club-med-welcome

Stay

We were treated with kind hospitality from the moment we arrived. We received a gracious welcome from Elodie, one of the many extraordinary G.O.s (Gracious Organizers) we’ve encountered on our visit. The cold cloths, welcome drinks and bottled water were a lovely welcome in the Caribbean heat. She offered us freshly cut coconut and delicious chocolates – a delight after our flight from the United States!

zen-oasis-deluxe-rooms-exterior

We were introduced to John, the Zen Oasis Manager who gave us a tour of their newest addition that was opened in 2015.

Zen Oasis is Club Med Punta Cana’s Adult-Only area that is ideal for couples and adults. We stayed at Zen Oasis for this trip and it was an amazing experience! Zen Oasis felt exactly that – a private oasis designed for a relaxing stay. From the landscape to the endless lagoon pool, every detail of the Zen Oasis zone was in perfect harmony.

zen-oasis-room-terrace

zen-oasis-room-with-a-view

Our room was on the top-level so we had a sweeping view of the Zen Oasis grounds from our private terrace. It even had a bed, chairs and table outside if you felt like lounging around. It was one of my favorite things about our stay in Zen Oasis.

The Deluxe Zen rooms are decorated in simple, yet beautiful red, white, gray and rich earthy browns. We felt at peace each time we entered our room.

loccitane-toiletries

The rooms have spa-like bathrooms with large rainfall showers, therapeutic bath tubs and mood lighting to help you unwind from the day’s activities.  They also include toiletries from L’Occitane and plush towels. If you’re a big fan of music, there is a blue tooth speaker you can use to play music from your mobile device. There is also an auxiliary port if you’d prefer to plug and play your device.

hibiscus-bar

Eat

In the mood for a drink? There is a mini refrigerator in the rooms along with bottled water (replenished daily) and a coffee/tea maker complete with tea bags and coffee. You can also visit the poolside wellness bar, Hibiscus Bar & Lounge for drinks, snacks and light meals. You can order the cocktail of the day, premium alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, teas, coffee, smoothies and other favorite drinks. I ordered their Pina Colada and was addicted.

premium-drinks

Bartenders Pier-Luc and Marie-Claire whipped up some top-notch drinks for us! You are also allowed to take your drink back to your room or relax by the pool. If you’re hungry for a large meal, there are 3 restaurants in different locations at the resort.

Zen Oasis has a concierge desk that can help you with just about anything you need. We met Chantal and Rafael and they were a big help! If you need to book a table at Indigo for dinner, pool towels or arrange airport transfers, concierge has you covered.

zen-oasis-lagoon-pool

Play

There are many ways you can relax within the Zen Oasis zone. You could take a dip in the lagoon pool or relax in the spacious Jacuzzi. If you don’t feel like swimming, no – problem! There are plenty of lounge chairs with shade or grab a seat on the private Zen Beach.

loccitane-spa

If you’re in the mood for some pampering, visit the on site Club Med Spa by L’Occitane. We had a full body massage with amazing lavender oil! There wasn’t any music, only the sound of the waves outside our window. I highly recommend it!
