May Update: A Month of Loss and New Beginnings

Hello everybody! I’m going to be honest, I wish I were updating our blog more often like I did pre-pandemic, but life is so much more different these days especially with travel. I’ve also fallen into this terrible habit of posting more content on social media platforms instead of my own website, and I need to change that.

So I’m taking baby steps and will try to at least do monthly life update posts (and other blog posts in between if I can.)

Let’s start with my birthday month, May.

R.I.P. Samson

Our Samson passed away on April 30, early in the morning in his sleep. He would’ve been 15 years old later this year. We are grateful for all of the memories we have of him and the memories shared between family and friends. He was the BEST dog in the world. He was patient, always looking out for the family.

A couple of years ago he showed signs of dementia and last year was when his body really began shutting down resorting to wearing diapers. The last few weeks had been rough. He could barely walk anymore, I would literally have to carry him around and help him stand up. It was heartbreaking to watch.

I feel guilty that I should have stayed up with him. I left him alone in the living room at 1a that morning but was going to try checking on him again later. I was so tired. The day before was rough and I hurt my lower back from carrying him around all day. So I took a nap, and when I woke up at 5a to check on him I discovered he was gone.

I’m very glad that I was able to spend his last full day with him (Ironically, I had that Friday off from work). We are still very sad about his passing.

RIP Samson you will never be forgotten.

Backyard Chickens

We have a new flock of backyard chickens! Well, Catherine (our Barred Rock hen) is still with us from the old flock. Unfortunately her two sisters (Mary and Elizabeth) passed away in their sleep due to old age over the last couple of years.

Our new flock of chicks came home with us in March. We started out with seven but after about a month, one of our chicks died. One of our Light Brahma chicks, Anya (that was her name) had digestive issues and wasn’t developing like the others. Anya was the sweetest with beautiful angel-like wings and she had a distinct singing voice like a songbird. She eventually stopped eating and passed away. We were told this happens often and the term in the chicken world is called “Failure to Thrive.”

In May, we moved our new flock out of our house and into the chicken coop. They love it so much out there! Their names and breed are: Katelyn and Sansa (Rhode Island Blues), Priya (Light Brahma), Charlotte and Victoria (Lavender Orpingtons) and Anna (Buff Orpington.)

Anna was originally not one of the breeds we wanted for the flock. When we went to the tractor supply store to pick up Victoria and Charlotte, we saw Anna in a brooder with other Buff Orpingtons and she was gasping for air. Meshach talked to an employee about it and they said she will most likely not live, but we can take her home for free to see if we can try saving her. We took extra special care of her around the clock for a week until she showed improvement.

Fast forward two months later and Anna is still thriving (she’s very sassy too!)

Super Flower Blood Moon

A Blood Moon is when the moon is in a total lunar eclipse and the sun’s illumination causes the red hue.

I’m a sucker for anything space related! We took our telescope out to get a closer look at the moon and wow – what a beauty! We could even see stars around it through our telescope!

Our photos were taken with an iPhone 13 Pro through our telescope’s lens. Meshach also took some photos with his Canon 80D.

Were you able to see the Blood Moon where you are?

Summer Kick Off

Meshach deeply cleaned our gross pool just in time for the unofficial kick off of summer – Memorial Day weekend! He did such a great job!

Also a lesson learned, invest in a good pool cover so your pool can stay clean during off season months.

Tristan is literally nearing his last day of school this week and then our summer vacation begins.

Disney World here we come!
