Our 2019 Blood Moon Photo Diary

We witnessed the Blood Moon this January 2019 and it was such a cool thing to see!

Since I was a kid, I’ve had a huge fascination with space. On a clear night, I would stare out my window with my mind racing with questions. What’s out there? Who is out there?

“When I first looked back at the Earth, standing on the Moon, I cried.” – Alan Shepard, Apollo 14

Fast forward as an adult, I still enjoy learning about space and doing activities that teach Tristan about the universe we live in. He has an enthusiastic thirst for knowledge at the age he is at, and we enjoy sharing unforgettable moments.

A Little Amateur Astrophotography

Meshach set up his tripod and Canon 80d to get some shots of the moon. Luckily, he has a remote for the camera so we could look out the window of our house and snap photos remotely.

It was so cold! One of the coldest nights we’ve had so far this winter at 25 degrees! Things started to kick off around 10:45pm and it was a couple of hours process. Tristan didn’t have school the following day so he was excited to stay up late and watch a Blood Moon for the first time in his life.

We didn’t stay outside the entire time, but we did occasionally go outdoors to check on the progress of the moon, and recompose the camera shot since the moon kept shifting in the sky.

You wouldn’t believe how quickly the Earth rotates!

What is a Blood Moon?

It’s actually a lunar eclipse – where the Earth passes between the Sun and the Moon. The orange-red color we see the moon change to is caused by the sun’s rays being bent around the Earth and casts on the Moon.

Hence the name, Blood Moon.

This year’s Blood Moon is the last total lunar eclipse we will see until May 2021.

A Lunar Event

And now I will leave you with a few more photos we took of the January 20, 2019 lunar eclipse (aka Blood Moon!)
