New Hope Valley Railway: Diesel, Steam & Ice Cream

This is one ride you do not want to miss! We spent the weekend in New Hill, NC at New Hope Valley Railway and attended their event, “Diesel, Steam & Ice Cream”. The Triangle’s Train is just 30 minutes away from Raleigh and Durham, making it a perfect day trip for people of all ages.

New Hope Valley Railway (The Triangle’s Train) is an all-volunteer educational non-profit organization. All proceeds from ticket fare and ride events go directly towards the museum, restorations and upkeep of the railway.

The staff are also there on a volunteer basis, all with the same love and goal of educating people about North Carolina railways and its history. The original New Hope Valley Railway was built in 1904 and ran through New Hope Valley which was later flooded by the creation of Jordan Lake. The railway was used for transporting tobacco, corn, cotton and other agricultural products. Passenger trains also used this rail line.

Take The Ride

We eagerly got our tickets and hopped aboard the covered, open-air passenger car for an unforgettable ride on this historic railway. With a loud “whoo-whoo” from the locomotive, we were on our way!

img-0028_orig

Winding around corners at a steady pace while passing through scenic woods, the ride offered a welcoming breeze on that hot summer day.

The ride itself lasts an hour and it takes you on a trip from Bonsal to New Hill and back. We also got to watch as the locomotive moved from one end of the train to the other via a second set of tracks when it was time to return to Bonsal.

Tip: There are no bathrooms on the ride so be sure to go prior to boarding, especially if you have the little ones with you! Also, bring a bottle of water when riding on hot days.

Local Ice Cream, Beer & Wine

Since this was an ice cream social event, Bruster’s Real Ice Cream of Apex gave everyone with a ride ticket, two scoops of delicious ice cream including your choice of toppings! They offered chocolate, strawberry, vanilla and mint chocolate chip. The toppings were M&Ms, sprinkles, Oreos and gummy worms.

My husband chose vanilla, our son got strawberry and I went for the mint chocolate chip! It was so good, especially on that hot day!

Southern Peak Brewery was offering their beer for purchase. Their neighborhood brewery and taproom is located in Apex, NC. With their 7-barrel brewhouse, this brewery is bringing back the traditional neighborhood brewery as seen decades ago. Go check them out!

RagApple Lassie Vineyards were doing a wine tasting at the event. We were asked if we would like to partake in the wine tasting – naturally, we said yes (we love wine)! I absolutely loved their Cabernet Sauvignon and I’m not much of a red wine drinker but I would make an exception for this one. It wasn’t too dry like many of the other Cabernet Sauvignon I’ve tried, it still had a little smoothness to it – which I loved. We were told they have a tasting room in Durham, I think we may have to visit! Food provided by vendors is available for purchase on most ride days.

We spent some time afterwards wandering through their outdoor railway museum – kids and railroad enthusiasts could probably spend hours at this railroad yard! Our son had such an amazing time watching and interacting with their G-scaled garden railroad (which is also maintained by volunteers) he did not want to leave!

img-0208_orig

He and the other kids loved pushing the buttons to control the handcar and also being squirted by a water cannon on one of the toy firetrucks.

Spotting Thomas on the tracks was a treat!

Parking and admission to the museum is free. There are many opportunities to catch a ride on New Hope Valley Railway. Here is a full schedule of their 2016 Ride Days and Events. There is also a Halloween train in October and “Holiday Santa Trains” ride for Christmas! If you’re interested in going, I suggest you book your tickets early since these two events are very popular.

To make a donation to the railway or sign up to become a volunteer (there is training involved) please visit their website.

Thank you so much to New Hope Valley Railway for hosting us at their “Diesel, Steam & Ice Cream” event!

Although we were welcomed as guests, my opinions are always my own.

On Location: Duplin Winery

We visited the largest and oldest winery in the South! Duplin Winery began in the 1970s when D.J. Fussell, Sr. and his two sons, David and Dan, decided to grow Muscadine grapes and produce wine. It was and still is a family business, making this winery even more special. The staff are like family and every customer is treated with kindness.

Duplin Winery Store

We had some time to spare before our winery tour began, so we took a look around their retail store. Their store sells not only wine, but delicious jams, dips, gifts and even homemade fudge! You could also buy them online through their website.

I seriously recommend the Muscadine Pineapple Habanero Salsa; mix it with cream cheese for an addictive dip! You could also find their wine at grocery and wine stores nationwide.

The Tour

The tour of their winery lasts about 30 minutes and offered every hour before closing. You will learn a lot about how they create their famous Muscadine wine. Our very informative tour guide, Angel, told us that this winery alone produces 6,000 bottles of wine on an hourly basis! Isn’t that wild?
duplin-tour-group_orig
If I remember correctly – when the Muscadine grapes are harvested, they are mashed twice, pressed, cooled, fermented, cooled again then begin the bottling process. Nothing goes to waste! They use the leftovers for making organic beauty products, vitamin supplements and much more.

The winery has a 1.5 million gallon capacity, making it the largest production facility on the East Coast. Muscadine grapes were chosen because they are native to North Carolina, which I had no idea until I took the tour!

Wine Tasting
There are two wine tastings offered: Basic ($5) and Deluxe ($10). The Basic offers a sample of 10 wines on their tasting menu (rotated out every 6 weeks) and the Deluxe offers the same except at the end you will receive a glass of your favorite wine from the list, along with crackers and dip plus you could keep your Duplin Winery wine glass!
duplin-wine-tasting-table_orig
A lot of people in our group upgraded their ticket to the Deluxe (we did the same) and it was definitely worth it! I chose Carolina Red Reserve as my favorite and my husband liked Sangria White. We pretty much devoured their Pineapple Habanero dip as well, it was so good!

The Bistro
After the excitement on our tour and wine tasting we were ready for lunch! We ate at their on site restaurant, The Bistro. Sabrina was our server and she was very helpful! Anytime we had a question about the food she knew the answer. We ordered fried green tomatoes for our starter and it was the very first time we’ve eaten this Southern dish! I need this recipe!

Tip: If you can’t finish your glass of wine from the tasting, you are welcome to take it with you to the restaurant or while hanging out on site.

We ordered the Bacon Cheeseburger with a side of fries as our main dish. I ordered the chocolate cake and my husband chose strawberry cheesecake for his dessert. Our entire meal was very tasty!

Great Daytrip

Duplin Winery is a nice getaway for a day trip. Not only will you get to taste wine straight from the source, but the staff and food are amazing. Thank you so much to the team at Duplin Winery for hosting us!

Although we were welcomed as guests at Duplin Winery, my opinions are always my own.

Kohler shower

I couldn’t get over the Kohler digital shower controller! There were so many settings for the jets and you could even adjust the temperature, etc. If we had this in our home, I would be in the shower for hours! It’s very addictive!

Fairview Dining Room dinner

Eat

There are many dining options from the casual Bull Durham Bar, Vista Restaurant to the AAA Four Diamond, Forbes Travel Guide Four-Star Rated restaurant, Fairview Dining Room. The restaurant offers plenty of fine dining options including Afternoon Tea.

Fairview Dining

Fairview Dining Room is also open for lunch, dinner, in-room dining and weekend brunch. It has a relaxing and elegant ambiance, especially at dinner. For our appetizer, we chose their spring and summer salads. They were so fresh! Probably because it came from local farmers, which we love!

There is also a very impressive wine list! Our wonderful server, Shahab, was very helpful in recommending what wines we should pair with each course of our meal. He also helped us decide on what plates we should try since it was our first time dining there.

Lamb

Before our main course, we were given a peach sorbet as the intermezzo (palate cleanser) so we could get our taste buds ready for the next course. What a great idea! We ordered the lamb for our main course and also had a taste of their aged 50 day old steak. We had the best meat ever at this restaurant!

1115113_orig

My husband ordered cheesecake and I ordered their molten chocolate cake for dessert. We topped off our amazing dinner with delicious, frothy cappuccinos.

Vista Restaurant

We had breakfast at  Vista Restaurant which is open for breakfast and brunch. You have the option of dining from the breakfast buffet where you could also get an omelet or waffle made to order anyway you’d like.

Breakfast buffet

Dania was the chef that morning, she made me the best cheese omelet I’ve ever had! She used American and Swiss cheese with the perfect balance of salt and pepper and then her secret – swiss cheese on top of the finished omelet! I am a huge lover of all cheeses (well maybe not blue cheese) so of course I was in cheese heaven that morning.

Lump crab

My husband also did the buffet but got a side of lump crab – he said it was the most delicious crab he’s ever had. You may be asking, “crab for breakfast?” trust me it’s good! We asked Jose, another amazingly friendly server, how it was made. Jose asked the chef for us and told us that Old Bay seasoning was used along with butter. We hope to try that at home, although I think it may not come out as good as the pros at Vista Restaurant!

French toast wasn’t on the buffet that morning so I ordered it from the menu. It was so good! I am a fan of french toast and don’t get to eat it as often as I’d like.

Washington Duke Inn & Golf Club has a well-manicured 18 hole championship golf course designed by Robert Trent Jones, the only one in the region.
